Revision History

The ACR and the FDA require that each mammography facility identify a lead interpreting physician who will be responsible for ensuring that all MQSA-required activities are carried out. The ACR Practice Parameter for the Performance of Screening and Diagnostic Mammography specifies that screening mammography may be performed without a physician in attendance. The Committee on Mammography Accreditation believes that adequate supervision can be maintained at off-site facilities through quarterly professional feedback. The facility should maintain a log of these interactions signed by the radiologist. This review should include all of the following:

  • Clinical image quality

  • Quality assurance procedures

  • QC documentation

  • A determination that safe operating procedures are used

In the event that your lead interpreting physician leaves your facility, a new one must be designated, per FDA regulations. A change of lead interpreting physician must be reported to the ACR. Your new lead interpreting physician/supervising radiologist must complete several forms so that we know that he/she is aware of his/her responsibilities. You may update the lead interpreting physician in ACRedit and print the necessary forms from the application. Once completed, please mail or fax them to the ACR (the address and fax number are on the form). Please contact the ACR Mammography Accreditation Program for further assistance.
