General Personnel Requirements: Documentation of Continuing Education (Revised 12-12-19)

Revision History

You are responsible for documenting your own continuing medical education (CME).

Continuing education requirements are based on previous full calendar years. For example, if a site renews its accreditation in July 2017, personnel at that site must have met the full requirement for continuing education from 1/1/14 to 12/31/16.  If they did not meet this requirement in the given timeframe, the ACR will accept continuing education credits or continuing experience obtained in 2017.

Certificates documenting attendance at conferences do not always break out the specific number of hours pertaining to specific subjects. To document initial requirements for CME, attach the syllabus or schedule of lectures for the meeting to the CME certificate for your records. If this information is not available, document how much time was spent on the subject and attach it to the CME certificate. This information is for your records only and should be readily available upon request.

Coursework that includes discussion of multiple modalities may be counted for CME credit for each of the modalities represented. The ACR recognizes that there are correlations between different types of imaging modalities and that physicians utilizing imaging must be cognizant of such relationships. Therefore, it is not unusual for a course in imaging to include discussion of more than one modality. Accordingly, any course that addresses multiple modalities will be entitled to count equal CME credit for all of the modalities discussed for the purposes of ACR accreditation. Note that only half of the CME must be Category I.

Personnel may possibly receive continuing education credit for presenting courses or lectures and/or reading or writing  articles or papers for journals. These credits must be from organizations that can assess and document the appropriate amount and type of continuing education awarded for the individual article/paper or course/lecture and are authorized to award such credit. Personnel should get a letter or other documentation from the authorized organization stating how many and what type of continuing education credits are awarded and the date the credit was given. Faculty may claim credit for teaching in programs designated for AMA PRA Category 1 Credit by applying directly to the AMA. Two AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™ are awarded for every hour of interaction, up to 10 credits per year. The application is available in the Physician Applications section of the AMA’s Continuing Medical Education website. You will need to download, complete and submit the Direct Credit Application to the AMA for credit. No credits are given for repeat presentations of the same material. It is the responsibility of the applicant to only claim the credit once, and credit may not be simultaneously earned as both a presenter and learner.

Additional information on obtaining continuing education credit for these activities is also available for medical physicists from CAMPEP and for technologists from ASRT.
